Tennis Players do Armidale Proud!
Fifteen of Armidale’s top junior tennis players formed part of the North West zone tennis team to compete against the Lower North East and Upper North East teams at the Champion of Champions tennis tournament in Inverell over the weekend.
To qualify for the event, the juniors had to be placed in the top 8 players of their age group in the North West zone, based on their performance in the 7 north west Medibank Junior Development Series tennis tournaments held throughout the area earlier in the year
Brock Sheriff (21/Under), Janaya Lockwood (21/Under) and Kayla Wicks (12/Under) won their respective events.
In winning her event, Kayla beat Taylah Beckman, a player with a national ranking of 521, which is a credit to both Kaylah and her coach Justin Sherriff.
Marc Lindberg (12/Under) reached the semi finals and also received the boys encouragement award out of all players on the weekend.
Chris Scott was named most improved player for the North West Team
Shelby Watson (16/under) came in 5th over the weekend and secured her place in the state finals as well.
Micky Brohmer (10/under) and Brandon Burey (16/under) received wild cards to play in the Medibank State Final.
Marc, Kayla, Micky, Brandon and Shelby Watson will now go on to compete in the 2009 State Masters final to be held in Gosford at the end of November.
